One of the hardest struggles in music is to become a good Jazz improviser. If you have found this page, you probably already know this. One of the first lessons you need to learn is that this struggle continues forever, no matter how good you are. Even the greats like Coltrane and Bill Evans were always pushing themselves.
Once you’ve learned and accepted this important lesson, you can let go of any frustrations you might have, and then start to enjoy playing. Matt can guide you through all the techniques and tricks you need to improvise. You'll learn standard jazz tunes and how to improvise through the chord changes. You'll also transcribe solos by great improvisers and learn what they were thinking while they were playing. You also will work on other skills essential to being a good musician, such as ear training, Jazz theory lessons, rhythm, and sight reading.
It doesn’t matter what instrument you play either – although Matt is a jazz guitarist, everything is entirely translatable between instruments. In fact, Coltrane studied with guitarist and famous teacher Dennis Sandole.
